What does each cook cost?
Worst-case estimate: heating elements cycle on and off once hot, so real use is usually lower for both the air fryer and the oven.
How the calculator decides
It starts from people: about 2 quarts for one, 4 for two, 6 for three or four, 8 or more for five and up. Those steps match published guidance: America’s Test Kitchen found its 6-quart winner feeds four, Instant rates its 2-quart Mini for up to two portions, and Cosori rates its 4-quart Lite for two to four.
Then it adjusts. Whole chickens and roasts push the minimum to 6 quarts. Cooking a main and a side together for three or more points to a two-drawer model. Toast, pizza or baking points to an air fryer toaster oven. Tight counters favor narrow bodies such as the 10.2-inch-wide Instant Vortex Slim or the flip-up Ninja Flip. The budget answer filters the picks.
The cost math is plain: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × your rate. A 1,700-watt fryer running 20 minutes at 18.2 cents per kWh comes to about 10 cents. The default rate comes from the EIA’s 2026 outlook.
Size and cost questions
What size air fryer do I need for one person?
About 2 quarts, like the Instant Vortex Mini. Go to 4 quarts if you like leftovers or cook for a guest now and then.
What size air fryer do I need for a family of 4?
5 to 6 quarts in a single basket, or 8 to 10 quarts across two drawers if you cook mains and sides together. America’s Test Kitchen found a 6-quart basket feeds four.
How much does it cost to run an air fryer?
At full power, a 1,700-watt fryer uses about 0.57 kWh in 20 minutes, which is about 10 cents at 18.2 cents per kWh. Real use is lower because the heater cycles once hot.
Is a bigger air fryer always better?
No. A bigger box takes more counter, and a deep basket doesn’t crisp more food if it can’t sit in one layer. Floor area matters more than quarts.
